Preliminary Exercise 3B: Introduction to Genre Conventions Bubble Organizer
9/23: Conventions Bubble Organizer
What do you prefer, actions movies, horror films, or sci-fi? These words are defined as the word: genre. A genre of a movie is a category referring to a specific style of composition. This may be favorited depending on a persons preference. Some audiences may prefer films with a scary ambience (horror), and others may prefer to sit back and watch a romantic sit com with their spouse. The genre of a film is significant because it draws attention to audiences which want to watch specific style of movie. Personally, I am drawn towards action films- a movie where engaging series of events play out, I implicate this only because an action movie can imply many types of sub genres inside the film itself. I am also interested in thrillers- a movie designated to thrill an audience, because of the suspense that leads to the plot line of a movie. I am most favorable of horror- a film where frightening things happens, because of the unsettlement I get from watching it which gradually get's entertaining. The style of film may correlate with the Mise en scene of the film by creating a mood & tone that is meant to play out through the movie, which again, is broadly meant to attract an audience in search of what is being presented to their likings.
During this exercise, me and my partner created a poster, which includes a bubble organizer representing 7 different aspects that the genre of a film may cohere to create a fixed style. We were able to create this poster by creating mental notes on how we want the design to look, and sharing it aloud with each other, along with sketching our bubble organizer to have enough space for our information! First, we the genre we will specify our task for (horror), and followed up by gathering our common knowledge along with the materials to start our preliminary exercise. By adding colors, and additional sketches to match the scheme of our gene, my partner and I found it appealing to attract an audience generally our age range. Overall, the value I take from this lesson is that genre is important to all key factors of a films production, along with the final result. Meaning, If I were to direct a horror movie, I would ensure to have the setting be a creepy place, whilst the acting of the characters must be frightened in such sort where the genre is developed. It would be nonsensical to include a full-hearted laughing stock character during the climax of a depressing film, hence creating this bubble organizer was a great way for me to bring about the connection between genre, and how it's induced in Mise en scene!
