Preliminary Exercise 3 A: Introduction to Mise en scene Codes Organizer

09/23: Elements of Mise en Scene

When watching movies, the customary audience enjoys their time viewing what is being presented. But what about the craft beyond what is being shown? For centuries, counting back to the 1700s, filmmakers has used the technique labeled as "Mise en Scene" to cohere a series of scenes together; which in French, means "the action of putting onto a stage". This is a crucial part of the creation of film to ensure that the final product is entertaining, while still appropriating its labeled genre. The next time you watch a moving picture, you may analyze the key elements of Mise en Scene: Color, Setting, Lighting, Acting, Composition, Design & Property/Prop, and Costume, Makeup, with a fashion scheme of hair. Just like I did in the video I was assigned, I analyzed 3 components which bettered my understanding of this technique. First, the visual aspect of Mise en Scene may help further boost the mood of a scene, making the audience feel a specific way. Second, the correlation between the quality of a character and where they are at (setting), may change the characters tone, and possibly the conflict/resolution of a film. And most importantly, what I took from this video is that every director has their own way of using mise en scene in their pre-production stages of film. In this blog, I will get into depth about my full understanding on the technique Mise en scene.
