Preliminary Exercise 4: Analyzing Setting for National Lampoon's European Vacation PowerPoint Presentation
When characters are engaging in a scene, they are placed inside a specific setting. In a film, the setting is the area where an event takes place. Along with many aspects- plot, setting, characters, and themes make up the key factors of a film. As a film producer, I value the protagonist as the predominant element in my piece. Not only does the protagonist interact with each component, but also is the main factor that is creating the plotline of the story. On the other hand, setting is an important mise en scene element because it is the most pointed out way for the director to adhere to what he/she is trying to create, and increases the imaginative cognition.
In this exercise, me and my partner were instructed to watch a video and evaluate the elements of setting in the given piece. In the short film, Americans were presented as a laughing stock visiting Britain, compared to the English people who the Americans encountered, who had a more profound, “normal” way of talking. The genre comedy is connotated throughout the video by the way that the script is designed to set Americans as fatuous people, when they keep on crashing into the British. Along with the tone difference between the two countries- the Americans were obnoxious, which may be connoted as dumbfounded. On the other hand, the British people were talking properly, which can be connoted as wise, and normalized. Using both of these elements, this may help represent the way the characters are presented in the film, ultimately leading me to create these slides about the video!
The media text being created is a multimedia presentation from google slides, this may engage my audience by allowing them to read my diagram about setting within this video. Some of the directions that were followed was to note the social and economic values of the characters in this film, along with annotating the message in the scene. The concept I acknowledged from this lesson is how to identify the way that setting may altercate the perspective on how you view a character. One may live under a bridge and you may connote them as poor- or live in a mansion and connote them as rich. Me and my partner Su-Young were able to adhere to our skills to create the comedic design of our powerpoint, along with providing the information needed. We did this by making a separate google document to provide information we were going to include in our exercise!
